What is an API (API)?

An Application Programming Interface is a set of digital rules that allows two different software programs to communicate and exchange information. Think of it as a waiter in a restaurant. You are the customer, and the kitchen is the AI model. You cannot walk into the kitchen to cook your own meal, so you give your order to the waiter. The waiter takes your request to the kitchen and brings the finished dish back to your table. In the world of business technology, an API acts as this messenger. It allows your company's existing software, such as a spreadsheet or a customer database, to send data to an AI system and receive a helpful response without you needing to build the AI from scratch.

Why this matters to you

APIs are the reason you can use AI features inside the software you already know. Instead of switching between different apps, your company uses an API to pipe AI capabilities directly into your current workflow. It turns a standalone AI tool into a functional part of your daily office routine, saving you from manual data entry or repetitive tasks.

How you might hear this

We connected our CRM to the AI through an API so it can automatically draft follow-up emails after each client call.
