What is a Black Box?
This refers to an AI system where the internal decision-making process is hidden or impossible to interpret, even by the people who created it. You see the input and the output, but the logic in between is obscured. Because these systems process vast amounts of data through complex layers of math, they do not provide a clear trail of how they reached a specific result. This makes it difficult for humans to verify if the system is relying on sound logic or if it is making errors based on hidden patterns.
Why this matters to you
If an AI makes a decision about your loan, health insurance, or job application, you need to know why it reached that conclusion to ensure it is fair and accurate. Without transparency, it is impossible to challenge an unfair decision or fix underlying errors in the system.
