AI news and the language around it, simplified.
What is a Central Processing Unit (CPU)?
A Central Processing Unit is the primary component of a computer that interprets and executes instructions from software. Think of it as the brain of your machine. It handles general tasks like running your operating system, opening your web browser, and managing your email. While it is excellent at performing a wide variety of sequential tasks one after another, it is not designed to handle the massive, simultaneous calculations required by modern artificial intelligence systems.
Why this matters to you
Understanding the limits of your hardware helps you manage expectations for AI projects. If your team tries to run complex AI models on standard office computers, you will likely experience significant performance bottlenecks because the hardware is not built for that specific type of heavy mathematical load.
How you might hear this
Our current server infrastructure relies on a standard CPU, so we need to upgrade our hardware to handle the new machine learning models we are deploying.
