What is Secure Boot (null)?
Secure Boot is a security standard designed to make sure that a computer boots using only software that is trusted by the original equipment manufacturer. When you turn on your computer, it checks the digital signature of each piece of boot software, such as firmware drivers and the operating system. If the signature is valid and trusted, the computer proceeds to start; if the signature is missing or altered, the computer blocks the process to prevent malicious software from loading. Think of it like a bouncer at a club who checks the ID of every person trying to enter to ensure they are on the approved guest list before letting them inside.
Why this matters to you
This is a critical layer of defense against sophisticated cyberattacks that attempt to infect your computer before the operating system even finishes loading. In a workplace, it ensures that company laptops remain secure from 'rootkits' or 'bootkits' that could otherwise bypass standard antivirus software. It is a fundamental component of modern IT security policies to protect sensitive corporate data.
