What is Shadow AI?
Shadow AI describes the use of artificial intelligence tools by employees without the formal knowledge, approval, or oversight of their organization. This often happens when staff members use personal accounts for work tasks, such as uploading sensitive documents to a public chatbot to summarize reports or using browser extensions to automate emails. It is the modern version of shadow IT, where employees bypass official software procurement processes to find faster ways to complete their daily work. While these tools can increase individual productivity, they often operate outside of the company's security framework, meaning the organization has no control over how the data is stored, shared, or used to train future models.
