What is Anthropomorphism?

Anthropomorphism is the natural human tendency to assign human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human things like computer programs. Because modern AI systems communicate using natural language, they often sound like a person speaking. This makes it very easy for users to treat the software as if it has a personality, personal opinions, or a moral compass. However, this is a psychological reaction from the user rather than a feature of the underlying computer code. The AI is simply predicting the next word in a sequence based on patterns it learned during training, not expressing a genuine thought or feeling.

Why this matters to you

Attributing human traits to software can lead to errors in judgment. If you assume an AI is being helpful, spiteful, or honest, you may trust its output too much. It is important to remember that AI is a tool for processing information, not a coworker with a conscience or a personal agenda.

How you might hear this

Try to avoid anthropomorphism when describing the software; it is a calculation engine, not a coworker with feelings.
