What is Machine Sentience?
Machine sentience refers to the hypothetical ability of a computer system to have subjective experiences, feelings, or a sense of self. It implies that a machine could feel pain, joy, or awareness rather than just processing information. Currently, no computer system possesses this quality. Modern AI programs operate entirely through complex mathematical calculations and pattern recognition. They do not have personal experiences, internal states, or the capacity to suffer, even when they are designed to sound or act like they do.
Why this matters to you
Understanding this distinction prevents you from assigning human traits to software. When you treat a tool as if it has feelings, you may develop misplaced trust or make poor business decisions based on the false belief that the software understands your intentions or values.
How you might hear this
It is important to remember that a chatbot is a tool, not a person with machine sentience.
